Pepe Herrera, the Pambansang Sidekick recently appeared on an episode of PalabasTayo WishList where he shared excerpts of songs from three of his dream roles/shows.

Before Pepe shot to mainstream consciousness, he did notable performances as Tolits in “Rak of Aegis” with PETA. Aside from playing Benny in “Ang Probinsyano” with Coco Martin, he also did a re-run of the musical, “Sa Wakas” and appeared in several TV soap operas and films including , “The Killer Bride”, “Sakaling ‘Di Makarating”, and “The Hopeful Romantic”. He is currently in the Deamscape Original Series, “24/7” with big stars including Julia Montes, JC Santos, Arjo Atayde, Tony Labrusca, and Meryll Soriano.

Pepe Herrera shows grit and heart

Pepe has a special kind of comedic skills reminiscent of Rene Requiestas, and is sometimes being compared to Empoy but with the charm and sex appeal to boot like Dolphy’s. What sets him apart though is his vocal prowess being a graduate of Voice from the University of Santo Tomas.

When we asked him to guest on PalabasTayo WishList, we were so happy that he accommodated despite his busy schedule. He did say that due to his hectic commitments, he unknowingly has put aside his love for singing and grabbed the opportunity to sing again.

It is his dream to play the titular role in “Jesus Christ Superstar”. He shared however that years ago, the song “Gethsemane” was too high for his range so he is doing us a favor with this rendition of the Andrew Lloyd Webber number.

For his second song, the soon-to-be-father revealed that he cries every time he listens to “I’m Here” from the Tony Award-winning musical that starred Cynthia Erivo. We especially loved Pepe’s gritty and heartfelt take on the song.

The jukebox movie musical “Across the Universe” featuring the songs of The Beatles and directed by Julie Taymor was planned to be staged on Broadway. Pepe chose “Let It Be” written by Paul McCartney because for him, it is the best prayer song.
