The ABS-CBN teen drama from the late 90’s Tabing Ilog will have a musical adaptation this year.

ABS-CBN’s Star Hunt recently posted teasers on its official Facebook and Twitter accounts but gave no details about the show’s reincarnation. We first heard about this project last year and based on conversations in the grapevine, the musical will be directed by a young, award-winning and Top-Notch performer.

The TV teen series revolved around the lives of best friends. It featured at the time, the most promising young stars. Paula Peralejo played Angela “Anne” de Guzman. Kaye Abad played Epifania “Eds/Ponyang” delos Santos. Desiree del Valle played Corrine Ledesma, Jodi Sta. Maria as Georgina “George” Fuentebella. Paolo Contis played Salvador “Badong” Magtibay. Patrick Garcia was Jaime “James” Collantes. John Lloyd Cruz played Rolando Victor “Rovic” Mercado. Baron Geisler was Alfonso “Fonzy” Ledesma. The show’s initial run aired on ABS-CBN from 1999-2003 and got a cult following from the youth. Studio 23 and Jeepney re-aired it from 2007 to 2010.

Netizens are already sharing mixed reactions:

In recent years, original Filipino musicals have been making a killing especially those based on jukebox hits like Ang Huling El Bimbo and Rak of Aegis. Himala, a musical based on an iconic film also had sold-out runs and received critical acclaim. We hope Tabing Ilog will not just bank on matinee idol power but also on great music that will make miracles for everyone and not have wrist-slashing results in ticket sales. Stay glued to PalabasTayo for updates on this project.
