The return to Far Far Away will take a little longer. Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation have officially postponed Shrek 5 to June 30, 2027 — marking the film’s second release date delay.

Initially slated for July 2026, then moved to December 23, 2026, the fifth installment in the billion-dollar franchise will now debut in the middle of next year, a historically successful corridor for Universal’s animation titles including Despicable Me, How to Train Your Dragon, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie. No official reason was given for the delay.

‘Shrek 5’ Delayed to Mid-2027

The new date puts Shrek 5 in direct competition with Sony’s Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, which opens less than a week earlier. The film was previously scheduled to bow just after Disney’s Avengers: Doomsday and Ice Age 6, sparking speculation that Universal is seeking a less crowded box office window.

In conjunction with the move, Universal also bumped up Illumination’s untitled event film to April 16, 2027.

Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz are set to reprise their roles as Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona. Zendaya joins the cast as Felicia, Shrek and Fiona’s teenage daughter, as revealed in the film’s trailer. Shrek 5 will be helmed by franchise veterans Conrad Vernon and Walt Dohrn, with Brad Ableson serving as co-director. Vernon previously co-directed Shrek 2, while Dohrn contributed to multiple entries and voiced Rumpelstiltskin in Shrek Forever After.

Produced by Gina Shay and Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri, Shrek 5 arrives 17 years after 2010’s Shrek Forever After and 26 years after the Oscar-winning original. The Shrek franchise has grossed $2.9 billion globally and spawned two Puss in Boots spin-offs, a Broadway musical, theme park attractions, and a London-based immersive experience.

While anticipation is high, early reactions to the trailer were mixed. Some fans criticized the new animation style, with one comparing it to the backlash over the original Sonic the Hedgehog design. Still, many remain eager for the beloved ogre’s long-awaited return.
