Following the Oscar-winning success of Oppenheimer (2024), which won Best Picture, Best Director, Best Lead Actor, Best Score, and more at the 96th Academy Awards, Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film, The Odyssey, is set to release in Philipine theaters in IMAX on July 15, 2026, according to Universal Pictures.

“Christopher Nolan’s next film The Odyssey is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX film technology,” the studio announced on December 23, 2024. “The film brings Homer’s foundational saga to IMAX film screens for the first time and opens in theaters everywhere on July 17, 2026.”

The Odyssey follows Odysseus, King of Ithaca, on his long and dangerous journey home after the Trojan War. Along the way, he encounters Polyphemus the Cyclops, the Sirens, the nymph Calypso, and the witch-goddess Circe. At home, his wife Penelope fends off suitors by weaving and unraveling a wedding train each night, hoping her husband will return.

Matt Damon was the first major actor reported to be in talks for a role, later revealed by Universal to be Odysseus. Tom Holland was confirmed soon after, followed by Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Benny Safdie, and Charlize Theron. Additional cast members announced later included Jon Bernthal, Himesh Patel, Elliott Page, Bill Irwin, Samantha Morton, Jesse Garcia, and Will Yun Lee. Corey Hawkins, Nick Tarabay, Jimmy Gonzales, and Maurice Compte were added in early 2025.

The film’s trailer premiered in cinemas alongside Jurassic World: Rebirth. As described in The New York Times, The trailer for The Odyssey, running just over a minute, opens with sweeping shots of the sea and a voice-over referencing Odysseus’s triumph in the Trojan War, hinted at by the shadow of a large wooden horse. Tom Holland appears as Telemachus, saying, “I have to find out what happened to my father,” to Jon Bernthal’s character, who responds, “Who has a story about Odysseus?” All dialogue is delivered in English with American accents, including Holland. The trailer ends with a powerful image of a bearded, marooned Matt Damon, presumed to be Odysseus, alone in the ocean, leaving much about the film’s storyline and character roles unrevealed. Fans are still waiting for the official online release of the film’s trailer.
