With rare footage, personal photos, and exclusive interviews, the documentary explores Billy Joel’s six-decade career and the life behind the music. Joel opens up about the moments that shaped his songs and the experiences that defined his path.

“There’s always a message in the music.”

Part One (July 18) looks back at Joel’s early life on Long Island, growing up with working-class parents and dealing with the emotional impact of his father’s departure at age eight. Viewers see Joel’s journey from local band keyboardist to solo artist, fueled by his relationship with Elizabeth Weber, which inspired songs like “Just the Way You Are” and “She’s Always a Woman.”

As his career soared with hits and tours, Joel also faced battles—against critics, addiction, and a motorcycle accident that nearly ended his ability to play. “I’m a work in progress,” he reflects, as he looks back on both triumphs and mistakes.

Part Two (July 25) follows Joel’s creative shift with albums like The Nylon Curtain, featuring songs like “Allentown” and “Goodnight Saigon.” The film covers his reunion with his father, the discovery of his family’s survival story during WWII, and the inspiration behind “Vienna.”

It also explores his marriage to Christie Brinkley, the birth of his daughter Alexa Ray Joel, and his continued evolution—from touring with Elton John to his residency at Madison Square Garden.

The documentary features interviews with Joel, his family, former wives, band members, and fellow artists including Bruce Springsteen, Sting, John Mellencamp, Nas, Pink, Garth Brooks, and Paul McCartney.

Billy Joel: And So It Goes airs in two parts on July 18 and 25 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max.
