A24 has announced the release date for Eddington, the newest film from writer-director Ari Aster. The film will open in theaters on July 18, 2025.

Set during the summer of 2020, Eddington is a modern Western and psychological thriller set in a fictional New Mexico town during the height of the pandemic. Joaquin Phoenix stars as Sheriff Joe Cross, who launches a mayoral campaign against Ted Garcia (Pedro Pascal), a progressive tech entrepreneur whose plans to bring an AI data center to the town spark a wave of unrest.

Written and directed by Aster, the film explores the fractured American psyche at a moment of historic crisis. “Eddington is about what happens when feedback ramps up beyond control and the bubbles collide,” Aster says. “I wanted to make a film that felt like the country we live in—without villainizing anyone.”

The ensemble cast includes Emma Stone, Austin Butler, Luke Grimes, Micheal Ward, Deirdre O’Connell, Clifton Collins Jr., William Belleau, Amélie Hoeferle, Cameron Mann, and Matt Gomez Hidaka.

Stone plays Louise, the sheriff’s wife, whose isolation draws her into an online conspiracy cult led by Peak (Butler), a mysterious internet figure. “She’s haunted by her past and wants to feel understood,” says Stone.

Featuring cinematography by Darius Khondji, production design by Elliott Hostetter, editing by Lucian Johnston, and a score by Bobby Krlic and Daniel Pemberton, Eddington continues Aster’s exploration of trauma, identity, and the American subconscious.
