Mariah Carey is officially back. The iconic singer has released Type Dangerous, her first major single in years and the lead track from her upcoming 16th studio album.

The song, which samples the hip-hop classic Eric B. Is President by Eric B. & Rakim, was teased for days on Carey’s social media. Fans first caught a hint of it in a video where she’s seen riding in a luxury car, listening to a track titled “T\:D_MC16.mp3.” The license plate reading “MC16” was a clear nod to her next album.

In a statement, Carey shared her excitement: “I’m so excited to finally be releasing ‘Type Dangerous’ into the world! I’ve been locked up in the studio for quite some time working my behind off on new music, and I’m thrilled for the unveiling of it to my fans, starting with ‘Type Dangerous!’”

The track opens with Carey saying, “To show my appreciation for your support, thank you, DJs,” mirroring a female voice in the Eric B. & Rakim original. Behind her, the words “Make ’em clap to this” set the tone.

Type Dangerous is full of swagger and personal references. “Taking off my coat, clearing my throat / Certified diamonds like the songs I wrote,” she sings. In another standout line, she adds, “Fresh outta Sing Sing, nah, I’m just playin’ / That was just a castle and an evil king” — a playful jab at her past relationship with former husband Tommy Mottola and the estate they once called home.

The song is packed with bold energy, with Carey declaring, “Looking for the dangerous type / I like them dangerous / That’s my type / I said I love them dangerous.” It blends her signature R\&B style with a modern edge, showing she’s still in full command of her sound.

Carey’s return has been met with enthusiasm. Type Dangerous quickly shot into the top 10 on the U.S. iTunes Top Songs chart, proving fans were more than ready. As of now, it holds the No. 9 spot.

She also released a lyric video alongside the single, featuring lines like, “Said we’d be together, but you didn’t stay forever. Now I guess it’s just whatever till the 12th of never. I’ve never been afraid of love. That’s why I like ’em dangerous.”

A music video, directed by Joseph Kahn — known for her All I Want for Christmas Is You visuals — is set to debut soon.

Carey has a busy month ahead. She’ll receive the BET Ultimate Icon Award on June 9 and headline Capital’s Summertime Ball at London’s Wembley Stadium on June 15.
