Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein is finally is coming to life on your screens. Describing his masterpiece, del Toro says Frankenstein is not just as a movie, but as a deeply personal journey. The first trailer, revealed at at Netflix Tudum 2025: The Live Event, gives a chilling glimpse into what del Toro calls the most meaningful film of his career.

“This is for me the culmination of a journey that has occupied most of my life,” del Toro said. “I first read Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein as a kid, and saw Boris Karloff in what became for me an almost religious state. Monsters have become my personal belief system.” For del Toro, the classic novel has always been more than a story. It’s a lens through which he has explored identity, grief, and love throughout his entire body of work. “There are strands of Frankenstein throughout my films,” he explained. “Exploring the relationship between humanity and monsters, creator and creation, father and son, has consumed my stories again and again.”
His connection to Shelley’s novel has been a driving force in his creative life for decades. “I wanted to make this film before even I had a camera, and I’ve been actively pursuing it now for 25 years. It has grown so close to me that now it’s biography,” he said.
The film stars Oscar Isaac as Dr. Victor Frankenstein, and Jacob Elordi as the creature he brings to life. Also appearing in the cast are Mia Goth, Christoph Waltz, Felix Kammerer, Lars Mikkelsen, Charles Dance, David Bradley, Ralph Ineson, and Christian Covery. Alexandre Desplat composed the score. Del Toro serves as writer, director, and producer.
Jacob Elordi expressed his admiration for the project, saying, “I recently had the great pleasure of playing the creature in Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein. I mean Guillermo is a real life genius and I am immensely grateful to be in the film and I’m really proud of the work that we all put into it.” Oscar Isaac added, “For those of you new to the tale, this is a story of a brilliant creator, driven to the edge of madness. He’s also very handsome in his years-long pursuit, bringing his creation to life. Playing the part of Victor Frankenstein, for this master of cinema has been an experience of a lifetime. The passion, the love and dedication we all put in this movie is reflected in every frame.”
Though the film features some haunting moments, del Toro insists this is not a horror movie in the traditional sense. “Somebody asked me the other day, does it have really scary scenes? For the first time, I considered that. It’s an emotional story for me. It’s as personal as anything. I’m asking a question about being a father, being a son… I’m not doing a horror movie — ever. I’m not trying to do that.”
Del Toro’s Frankenstein will premiere on Netflix in November 2025.
