In one of film and television’s biggest nights, a new group of world-class actors and actresses were celebrated at the 2022 Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards held in Santa Monica, California on February 27, 2022. The award show’s 28th program gave due recognition to historic and record-breaking winners from deaf ensemble actors to stars of the South Korean hit series Squid Game amidst a large pool of nominated A-list Hollywood celebrities.

The Apple TV+ film CODA won the award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, beating out major films like Netflix’s Don’t Look Up and Universal Pictures’ House of Gucci. CODA is now the first film with a predominantly deaf cast to win the award, and the first film with American Sign Language (ASL) as its prominent language to claim the prestigious recognition.

Troy Kotsur, one of CODA’s supporting actors, also took home the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role award, making him the first deaf actor to be nominated for and win the award. While accepting the first award of the night with his sign language interpreter, Kotsur declared his love for his wife and joked about his daughter not being allowed to use the SAG trophy as a jewelry display.

Meanwhile, Squid Game’s Lee Jung-jae and Jung Ho-yeon won the Outstanding Male and Female Actor in a Drama Series awards, respectively. Lee was so surprised by his win that he couldn’t get to the speech he had prepared, while the teary-eyed Jung expressed her adoration for her Squid Game peers and recalled watching the biggest stars in the crowd on the big screen back in the day and dreaming of becoming an actor.

Lee and Jung are the first actors from Asia to win the prestigious awards, also making Squid Game the first non-English language TV series to win at the SAG Awards. The series also won the award for Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Television Series.

West Side Story’s Ariana DeBose won Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role, making her the first Afro-Latina and openly-queer woman of color to win the award. DeBose thanked the SAG-AFTRA for recognizing her work in acting while acknowledging her roots as a Broadway performer and dancer.

Will Smith bagged the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role award for his portrayal of the titular role in the biographical drama film King Richard. “That may have been one of the greatest moments of my career just now, because my name was called for King Richard sitting next to Venus Williams,” Smith expressed his delight in winning the award in the presence of Williams’ daughter, who served as an executive producer of the movie, alongside sister Serena Williams.

Other winners include The Eyes of Tammy Faye’s Jessica Chastain (Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role), Ted Lasso’s Jason Sudeikis (Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series), Hacks’ Jean Smart (Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series), and Dopesick’s Michael Keaton (Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series), who, while holding back tears, dedicated his win on a show about America’s struggle with opioid addiction to his nephew, who has passed away in 2016 after an accidental drug overdose.
