Fantasia Barrino will star in “The Color Purple” movie musical to be directed by Blitz Bazawule from Marcus Gardley‘s screenplay. The American Idol Season 3 winner who took over the musical’s lead role in 2007 will officially wear Miss Celie’s Pants on the big screen.
In a recent Instagram post, Fantasia shares her excitement to be part of the Warner Bros. Pictures film adaptation of the musical based on the novel by Alice Walker. She says, “The last time I stepped into this character, the similarities between what I portrayed on stage and what I experienced in my own reality were too close for comfort. I’ve learned since then that my pain was only an introduction to a greater purpose of meaning and assignment.” She adds, “I hope that every little black girl who is fighting to be heard and recognized also promises to never give up in spite of the costs. Now everyone who has been wondering why I’ve been missing and so quiet can see that I’ve been dedicating all of my time to All Things Purple!”
Joining Fantasia is Danielle Brooks who will play Sofia, the same role that got her a Tony nomination for Best Featured Actress in the award-winning musical’s revival in 2015. The actress also known for her Orange Is The New Black role recalls the moment she found out about her casting as Sofia. She was told that she has one more meeting with the director and then a beautiful black woman in purple appeared on screen to surprise her. It was Oprah Winfrey, who played the same role in Steven Spielberg’s film saying, “Sofia, So-FEEE-AAHHHHH!! It’s your day! I am here, representing all things purple to tell you, you are our Sofia”.
Completing the star-studded cast are:
- Colman Domingo as Mister
- Halle Bailey as Nettie
- Taraji P. Henson as Shug Avery
- Corey Hawkins as Harpo
- H.E.R. as Squeak
Winfrey who is producing the new film together with Scott Sanders, Steven Spielberg, and Quincy Jones says, “It has been a vehicle for magic and purpose in my life. I don’t know anybody who’s ever been associated with it whose life didn’t get enhanced. “The Color Purple musical film is scheduled for release in theaters globally on December 20, 2023.
