As part of its Playback Series, Playbill.com will stream Disney’s Newsies: The Broadway Musical on August 21 at 7PM EST for the benefit of The Actors Fund.

The free stream is by arrangement with Disney Theatrical Productions and Disney+ and will be available for one night only on Playbill.com. It will include appearances by Newsies cast members and a video finale featuring cast members from the Disney hit’s Broadway and North American tour productions.

The show stars Jeremy Jordan reprising his Tony-nominated performances as Jack Kelly, Kara Lindsay as Katherine, Ben Frankhauser as Davey, and Andrew Keenan-Bolger as Crutchie, with Newsies North American tour stars Steve Blanchard as Joseph Pulitzer, Aisha de Haas as Medda Larkin, and Ethan Steiner as Les, all captured live in 2016 at the Hollywood Pantages Theater.

Newsies’ music was written by Alan Menken with lyrics by Jack Feldman, and book by Harvey Fierstein. It won two awards out of its eight Tony nominations: Best Original Score and Best Choreography.

The musical was based on the real-life “Newsboy Strike of 1989,”. It was initially created as a Disney movie musical in 1992 and was brought to the Broadway stage in 2011 at the Paper Mill Playhouse.

The Manila, Philippines staging by 9 Works Theatrical in 2017 was recognized by Gawad Buhay, the local award-giving body for performing arts. It received awards for Outstanding Choreography for a Play or Musical by PJ Rebulida, Male Lead Performance in a Musical by Gian Magdangal, Outstanding Ensemble Performance for a Musical, Outstanding Production of Existing Material for a Musical.
