Apple TV has announced an exciting new culinary adventure, “The Unlikely Cook with Awkwafina,” starring and executive produced by Emmy and Golden Globe Award winner Awkwafina. The eight-episode unscripted series follows the acclaimed actor and comedian as she takes a personal, cross-country journey to rediscover her family’s legendary cooking heritage.
In the series, Awkwafina—born Nora Lum—dives into contemporary Asian American cuisine while tracing the roots of her family’s iconic Cantonese restaurant, Lum’s, in Flushing, New York. “I’ve never been trusted around a kitchen, so I thank everyone involved for opening that part of my house up to me,” said Awkwafina. “Food has been a huge part of my family’s history, and to be able to explore and reconnect with that legacy has been an incredibly rare and very special opportunity.”

Despite growing up surrounded by food, Awkwafina admits she can’t cook. Her journey explores whether she can learn the skills to honor her family’s culinary past while putting her own spin on it. With guidance from renowned chefs, restaurateurs, and her supportive family, she sets out to understand what it truly takes to master Asian cuisine in the kitchen.
The series is produced by Twofour for Apple TV and executive produced by Lum, David Brindley, Itay Reiss, and Caroline Davies. This marks the second collaboration between Twofour and Apple TV, following the Emmy Award-nominated travel series “The Reluctant Traveler with Eugene Levy.”
Fans of food, travel, and heartfelt family stories will find a lot to enjoy in this series. Awkwafina’s charm, humor, and curiosity bring a fresh perspective to the culinary world. “The Unlikely Cook with Awkwafina” promises both laughs and inspiration as it highlights the importance of heritage, family, and the transformative power of food.
