Freakier Friday took my heart and put it back together again, and fans who have been waiting decades will feel the same as one of the best sequels of a beloved cult classic hits cinemas this August 06 2025.
There is so much love in every scene of Freakier Friday, deeply exploring concepts of unconventional family settings packaged beautifully in Disney magic comedy. The film was fully aware that their target audience is not just kids showing up to watch a comedy starring Lindsey Lohan, but also the fans who grew up watching Freaky Friday from 2003 and have kids on their own with adult problems to deal with; the very same adult fans that laughed, sobbed, and smiled along with me in the cinema where I went. To that end, the jokes were well distributed to have varieties that resonate both with Gen Z kids and with millennials, with a healthy dose of jokes that land somewhere in between.

This film wove the plot so masterfully that Freaky Friday and Freakier Friday would feel like a back-to-back television episode, 22 years apart. It is crystal clear that the team behind this sequel loved Freaky Friday to the point of obsession. Call backs to events of the first film, including cameos of old favourite characters, were peppered throughout the story, with some even taking on roles pivotal to the plot. The film also came up with fun and creative twists to the events that transpire, subverting expectations and taking advantage of the vulnerability of the audience to well-written stories of filial love and where the characters end up happy at the end.
However, given how integral the first film is to this sequel, Freakier Friday to a fault should not be watched without prior knowledge of its 2003 predecessor. While all the fans have no issues with rewatching Freaky Friday for the 100th time, not everyone would find the time to watch a family comedy from the 2000s, and that ultimately prevents them from fully appreciating this magnificent sequel.
Nonetheless, Freakier Friday perfectly captures the elements of high-energy family drama comedy that made Freaky Friday the hit that it became in 2003. Watching the sequel transported me back to the living room in my parents’ house where we rocked to the performance of Pink Slip. I did not know that I have been waiting for this all my life, and now I know that they delivered the ultimate sequel.
