After weeks of speculation, the rumors are now confirmed. Ariana Grande and Jonathan Bailey will star in a London revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park With George at the Barbican Centre.
The production will begin performances in summer 2027, with tickets set to go on sale this May. Tony and Olivier Award winner Marianne Elliot will direct the revival, with design by Tom Scutt. The show is produced by Empire Street Productions and presented in association with the Barbican.
Confirmation came after a social media post that quickly drew attention from fans. Earlier this week, Grande and Bailey shared a joint image on Instagram showing the pair seated in front of Georges Seurat’s A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, the painting that inspired the musical. Bailey captioned the post with the lyric, “All it has to be is good.”
The announcement follows a report last month that the two actors were considering a revival of Sunday in the Park With George. The musical was last staged in a major Broadway production in 2017, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Annaleigh Ashford.
First opening in 1984, the Tony- and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical starred Mandy Patinkin and Bernadette Peters. It ran for 35 previews and 604 performances before closing in October 1985. The original production earned 10 Tony Award nominations, including acting nominations for its two leads.
Structured in two acts, the musical uses the same cast to portray different characters. The first act centers on George, a fictionalized version of painter Georges Seurat, as he dedicates himself to completing his masterpiece with the support of his muse, Dot. The second act shifts to George’s great-grandson, also named George, a contemporary artist navigating creative pressure as he prepares to present his work, aided by his grandmother, Marie.
Grande and Bailey recently appeared together onscreen in Jon M. Chu’s two Wicked films, portraying Glinda and Fiyero. In a recent interview with Variety, Grande hinted that a major announcement was imminent, fueling speculation among fans.
With its high-profile casting, acclaimed creative team, and one of Sondheim’s most respected works, the Sunday in the Park With George revival is shaping up to be one of London theater’s most closely watched productions when it opens in 2027.
