Sabrina Carpenter is bringing her musical talent to the big screen with a new film inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. The two-time Grammy nominee will both star in and produce the untitled project for Universal Pictures.

Lorene Scafaria, known for Succession and Hustlers, will write and direct the musical. Marc Platt (Dear Evan Hansen, La La Land) will produce through his Universal-based Marc Platt Productions, alongside Leslie Morgenstein and Elysa Koplovitz Dutton of Alloy Entertainment.

Sabrina Carpenter to Star, Produce New 'Alice in Wonderland' Musical

Plot details remain under wraps, but the project is inspired by Carroll’s 1865 novel about a girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit hole into a fantastical world. The story has inspired numerous adaptations, including Disney’s 1951 animated film and Tim Burton’s 2010 live-action version starring Mia Wasikowska and Johnny Depp.

This will mark Carpenter’s first major studio acting role. She is best known for playing Maya Hart on Girl Meets World and has appeared in Netflix’s Tall Girl, Prime Video’s Emergency, and 20th Century Fox’s The Hate U Give. She will also guest star in a special Muppet Show episode celebrating its 50th anniversary.

Fans have long hoped Carpenter might join a third Mamma Mia! film. Producer Judy Craymer told Deadline, “She’d be a goddess or some relation who would look very much like Meryl Streep. It’ll happen when it happens.”

Carpenter is currently on her Short n’ Sweet tour, concluding November 23 in Los Angeles. She also received six Grammy nominations for her latest album, Man’s Best Friend, including Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best Music Video for “Manchild.”

With Carpenter’s musical success and Scafaria’s directing expertise, this Alice in Wonderland musical promises a modern, imaginative adaptation of the beloved classic. Universal Pictures has not announced a release date.
