The Manila Symphony Orchestra (MSO) celebrates its Centennial or 100th anniversary with a concert that honors its storied past and embraces the promise of the future. Exactly one hundred years ago, the MSO performed Beethoven’s Leonore Overture No. 3 at its inaugural concert. That same work now returns to the stage, first conducted by founder Alexander Lippay and this time led by Singaporean guest conductor Darrel Ang. The evening also features Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto with rising Chinese pianist Muyu Liu as soloist.

The celebration continues with two works by National Artist for Music Ryan Cayabyab—Misa 2000 and Te Deum—performed with the world-renowned Philippine Madrigal Singers under Professor Mark Anthony Carpio. The concert stands as what organizers describe as “a resounding tribute of gratitude to the MSO’s enduring faith, excellence, and service to the Filipino musical spirit.”

Beethoven’s Leonore Overture No. 3 is one of his most dramatic orchestral works, transforming the struggle for freedom and triumph of spirit into a sweeping symphonic journey. Performed at the orchestra’s first concert in 1925, its return marks a full circle in the MSO’s century-long story. The Emperor Concerto, written during wartime Vienna, remains one of Beethoven’s grandest works. Its commanding opening chords and heroic energy highlight the brilliance of both pianist and orchestra, revealing Beethoven’s mature mastery.

Cayabyab’s Misa 2000 and Te Deum bring a distinctly Filipino voice to the centennial stage. Misa 2000 unites Western sacred tradition with Filipino musical identity, combining choir, orchestra, and indigenous instruments. Te Deum radiates joy and gratitude, setting the traditional Latin hymn to music filled with rhythmic vitality and emotional depth. Together, they embody the spirit of thanksgiving that defines the MSO’s 100th year.
