Quezon City has officially been named a UNESCO Creative City of Film, marking a historic moment for Philippine cinema. It is one of the first cities in Southeast Asia to earn this recognition, solidifying its place as the country’s film capital.

The designation gives Quezon City the chance to strengthen its film sector by implementing stronger worker protection policies such as the Eddie Garcia Law, ensuring fair wages and safe working environments. It also opens doors to programs that support skills training, professional development, and international exposure for Filipino filmmakers.

The announcement follows the city’s declaration of itself as the heart of Philippine cinema, with this year’s QCinema International Film Festival adopting the theme “QC Film City.” Now, with UNESCO’s recognition, that title carries global weight.

In a statement, Mayor Joy Belmonte said, “QC Film City is now a name that will forever be etched in the legacy of every filmmaker, artist, and storyteller who has shaped our city’s vibrant film heritage. From the golden era of Sampaguita Pictures and the brilliance of icons like Lino Brocka, Dolphy, Nora Aunor and Fernando Poe Jr., to the new generation of creators bringing our stories to life today—this recognition honors each and every one of them.”

She added, “This is for the workers behind the screen and the QCitizens who deserve quality access to films. Today, we celebrate a big achievement in Philippine cinema but the work starts again tomorrow.”

The Quezon City Film Commission (QCFC), which led the city’s 2023 application to the UNESCO Creative City of Film Network, will launch several major initiatives to build on the honor:

  • QC Screen Academy – A public training hub that develops skills in film production, distribution, and marketing.
  • Global Producers Exchange (GPX) – A platform for Southeast Asian and UNESCO Creative City producers to collaborate and share insights.
  • Southeast Asia Film Summit – An annual gathering of industry leaders and policymakers to promote regional partnerships.

QCFC Executive Director Liza Diño said, “This achievement is the culmination of years of collaboration, vision, and belief in the power of storytelling to shape our collective identity.” She added, “This is not just a recognition of what we have achieved—it is a call to deepen our commitment to creative governance and cultural sustainability.”
