Capitol Records has released a new version of Whitney Houston’s iconic hit “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)”, featuring multi-Platinum singer-songwriter Calum Scott. This marks the first time Whitney’s original vocal stems have been used in a new duet.

The new rendition transforms the upbeat 1987 classic into a moving symphonic ballad. Blending Calum’s soulful vocals with Whitney’s legendary performance, the duet highlights the song’s deep emotional longing.

“Growing up, my mum would play Whitney Houston’s music in the car and her legendary voice had a big impact on me,” said Calum Scott. “It has truly been an honour to be trusted with Whitney’s voice to reimagine her song as a duet ballad which I hope continues to immortalise her incredible artistry.”

The release celebrates the 40th anniversary of Whitney’s historic career, which began with her self-titled 1985 debut album — now certified Diamond in the U.S. by the RIAA. The single “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” itself was recently certified eight-times Platinum in the U.S.

Pat Houston, executor of Whitney’s estate, shared, “When we make decisions on behalf of Whitney, we always want to be authentic to her creative integrity. I love Calum’s rendition of the song, and we decided to move forward with the release.”

Produced by Calum alongside Jon “MAGS” Maguire, Andrew Yeates, and Charlie T in the UK, the track features a live string section. Whitney’s vocals were produced by her longtime collaborator Narada Michael Walden. Calum said recording in the original key with the key change “pushed his boundaries” and required careful attention to keep Whitney’s vocal untouched.

Songwriters George Merrill and Shannon Rubicam were deeply moved. “Hearing the raw intensity of Whitney’s voice… joined in the chorus by the warmth and power of Calum’s voice, was an emotional experience.”

Originally a global No.1 hit in 1987, the song remains one of Whitney’s most beloved tracks — now brought to life again in a touching tribute.
