Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation are in early discussions to develop a sequel to KPop Demon Hunters, the animated musical feature that has quickly become a global cultural and commercial phenomenon.
Since its June 20 release, the film has amassed 236 million views, surpassing Red Notice to become the most-watched English-language film in Netflix’s history, according to figures confirmed Tuesday. Netflix declined to comment on the sequel talks, first reported by Deadline.

Directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, the film follows Rumi (voiced by Arden Cho), Mira (May Hong), and Zoey (Ji-young Yoo), members of the K-pop group Huntr/x. Offstage, the trio carry on an ancient lineage as demon slayers. Their greatest challenge emerges when a powerful adversary (Lee Byung-hun) forms a rival boy band to steal the souls of unsuspecting fans.
The film’s popularity has extended beyond streaming. Over the weekend of August 22–24, a sing-along version screened in over 1,700 North American theaters, earning \$19.2 million and topping the domestic box office—marking a rare theatrical win for a Netflix property. The version was released on the platform later that weekend.
The soundtrack has also made history, becoming the first to place four songs simultaneously in the Billboard Hot 100 Top 10. Leading the surge is “Golden”, performed by Huntr/x, which has since been released in multiple languages. A newly released Tagalog version, voiced by Filipino perfomers Felicity Kyle Napuli, Venisse Siy, and Maronne, is now available on Spotify.
The film was produced under a pandemic-era licensing deal in which Netflix financed the \$100 million budget and paid Sony a fee. While Sony retains music-related rights, merchandising is controlled by Netflix.
“There’s a lot of questions that are left unanswered,” said Kang, pointing to unexplored storylines for Mira and Zoey. “It just wasn’t the movie for those stories.”
