The Sandbox Collective has announced that it will open its 2026 season with the Tony Award-winning musical Spring Awakening. The production is set to premiere in February 2026 at a brand-new venue—The Black Box at The Proscenium Theater, Rockwell Center, Makati City.
Winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Spring Awakening features a book and lyrics by Steven Sater and a score by Grammy-nominated composer Duncan Sheik. Based on the controversial 1891 play by Frank Wedekind, the rock musical is set in 19th-century Germany and follows a group of teenagers as they confront the trials of adolescence, sexuality, and societal repression.

Set to a pulsing alternative rock score, the show captures the raw emotion and intensity of youth. “Spring Awakening explores the journey from adolescence to adulthood with a poignancy and passion that is illuminating and unforgettable,” the company shared.
At the helm of the production is Gawad Buhay nominee Andrei Nikolai Pamintuan (Lungs, Sa Wakas, Fringe Manila), with musical direction by multi-awarded composer and arranger Ejay Yatco (Pingkian, Little Shop of Horrors).
The creative team also includes Nunoy Van den Burgh (choreography), Missy Maramara (intimacy direction), Wika Nadera (set design), Raven Ong (costume design), Gabbi Campomanes (assistant direction), and D Cortezano (lighting design).
Spring Awakening marks a new chapter for The Sandbox Collective. “While it honors the journey they’ve had in the last decade – the coming of age and constant rediscovery – it also marks a deliberate choice to continue producing shows that are radical, brave and advocacy-driven,” the company said. “This show isn’t just about adolescence and sexuality. It’s about reclaiming one’s body, voice and destiny and most of all, educating and empowering young audiences.”
