Multi-award-winning artist Sam Smith has released their new single, To Be Free. The track, out now via Capitol Records, highlights Sam’s signature soaring vocals, accompanied by The TwoCity Chorus. Rooted in acoustic soul, the song reflects on vulnerability as a path to courage and freedom.

“I’ve never had a recording experience like I did making this song,” Sam shares. “It’s one vocal and guitar take from start to finish – one live performance of me and my friend Simon Aldred in a pure state of music and expression.”
Written and produced alongside longtime collaborator Simon Aldred, To Be Free was first created five years ago during the making of Sam’s Gloria album. “It was created during a time in my life where I became free within myself,” Sam says.
The song draws imagery from rivers, which hold deep meaning for Sam. “I grew up next to a little river in Cambridgeshire… then moved to London and lived by the Thames… now I live by the Hudson River,” they explain. “It’s become my sister, my family member and ultimately calms me. Now, I’m ready to let it go and hopefully it can do the same for someone else.”
Alongside the release, Sam announces To Be Free: New York City – a 12-night residency at Warsaw in Brooklyn. The intimate series begins soon, with artist presale starting Tuesday, July 29 at 10 am, and general sale opening Friday, August 1 at 10 am. More details are at samsmith.world/ToBeFreeNYC.
The official video, filmed at Warsaw, captures a powerful live performance with The TwoCity Chorus – a group of artists from Philadelphia and New York, curated by Brandon Pain with support from Ant Clemons. Directed by (LA)HORDE, with custom looks by Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood, the visual is full of emotion, movement, and joy.
With over 56 billion streams, Sam Smith continues to leave a lasting mark on global music.
