Broadway’s 2025–2026 season begins this Thursday with the premiere of Call Me Izzy, the first new production to take the stage following the recently concluded Tony Awards. Held last Sunday night in New York City, the ceremony celebrated a record-breaking 2024–2025 season, which brought in an unprecedented $1.89 billion—making it the highest-grossing Broadway season on record. Now, with a new season underway, all eyes are on Call Me Izzy to set the tone.

Call Me Izzy

Starring six-time Emmy® Award winner and Tony® nominee Jean Smart, Call Me Izzy is a powerful one-woman play that will run for a strictly limited 12-week engagement. Written by Jamie Wax and directed by Sarna Lapine, the play tells the story of a woman in rural Louisiana whose secret is both her greatest gift and her only way out. Through dark comedy and emotional depth, the show follows her journey as she uses her writing to process trauma, survive abuse, and fight to reclaim her voice.

Smart is expected to deliver a tour-de-force performance in this one-person-play, portraying a character driven by fierce imagination, humor, and resilience. The play is a raw and moving portrait of survival and self-expression, exploring difficult themes such as abuse and abusive relationship dynamics.

Set at Studio 54 in New York City, Call Me Izzy opens as Broadway begins a new chapter. “The 2025–2026 Broadway season officially begins this Thursday with a little show I know something about, called Call Me Izzy. It is a play starring the great Jean Smart that I am lucky enough to be the writer of.” said playwright Jamie Wax. We are the first show of the new Broadway season. May it be as successful a season as this past one”.
