Acclaimed actor, director, and theatre visionary Bart Guingona returns to the Manila stage in David Hare’s powerful monologue, Via Dolorosa, a timely and stirring exploration of identity, conflict, and faith. This limited engagement runs from May 2 to 11 at WhyNotMNL, 4th Floor Karrivin Studios, Chino Roces, Makati City.
Presented by The Necessary Theatre in collaboration with WhyNot Manila, this revival marks more than just a return to the boards—it’s a reawakening of a conversation that began over two decades ago. First staged and starred by Guingona in Manila in 2002, Via Dolorosa remains deeply resonant in today’s fragmented world.

Written by renowned British playwright David Hare, Via Dolorosa chronicles his deeply personal and revelatory journey to Israel and Palestine. What begins as a travelogue quickly unfolds into a kaleidoscope of perspectives—33 distinct voices brought to life by Guingona in an extraordinary solo performance. Through vivid, often humorous conversations, the play invites audiences to navigate a land where history, politics, and faith collide.
Guingona, known for his searing portrayals and fearless direction, brings new urgency and nuance to Hare’s text. “It’s not just a monologue—it’s a pilgrimage of empathy,” says Guingona. “This play doesn’t offer easy answers, but it demands that we listen.”
Whether you are discovering Via Dolorosa for the first time or revisiting it through a more contemporary lens, this production promises to be one of the most thought-provoking productions of the year.
