A24’s new romantic comedy Eternity presents a unique and emotional story about love, loss, and the afterlife.

Directed by David Freyne, the film takes place in an afterlife where souls have only one week to decide where they will spend eternity. The story centers on Joan, played by Elizabeth Olsen, who faces an impossible choice after her death: between Larry (Miles Teller), the man she shared her life with, and Luke (Callum Turner), her first love who died many years ago and has waited decades for her arrival.

The trailer reveals Joan’s confusion and heartbreak. “A lot has happened in a week,” she says. “You died. I died. I’ve just been reunited with both of my dead husbands, and I have to pick where to spend eternity.”

Eternity blends heartfelt emotion and humor, offering a fresh take on romantic comedy. The screenplay, co-written by Freyne and Pat Cunnane, was recognized on the 2022 Black List for its originality.

Alongside Olsen, Teller, and Turner, the film features John Early, Olga Merediz, and Oscar winner Da’Vine Joy Randolph, rounding out a strong ensemble cast.

Olsen recently described the film as “real fun” and “a callback to Billy Wilder films,” expressing excitement for its release. The movie will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival before a theatrical release this November.
