Every Brilliant Thing, the celebrated one-person play by Duncan Macmillan with Jonny Donahoe, is making its West End debut this summer. The production will run at @sohoplace from August 1 to September 27, marking the first time the show will be staged in London’s West End—after more than a decade of performances around the globe.
Since its premiere at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2014, the play has toured over 80 countries, including a notable run in the Philippines, where it was performed by Teresa Herrera, Kakki Teodoro, and Jon Santos. It has also been staged in the U.S., Canada, Australia, and across Europe, and was adapted into a widely acclaimed HBO special starring Donahoe himself.

The story centers on a child who begins writing a list of life’s brilliant things to help their mother navigate depression. Over the years, the list evolves into something much deeper, shaping their own understanding of love, loss, and what makes life worth living. With humor and heart, the play offers an honest, uplifting look at mental health and resilience.
For the West End premiere, a rotating cast of guest performers will take on the role:
- Lenny Henry (1–30 August)
- Jonny Donahoe (13 August–1 September)
- Ambika Mod (2–26 September)
- Sue Perkins (4–27 September)
Directed by Jeremy Herrin and Duncan Macmillan, the production features design by Vicki Mortimer, lighting by Jack Knowles, sound by Tom Gibbons, and casting by Jessica Ronane. It is produced by Second Half Productions with Nica Burns and Paines Plough.
“I am over the moon to be back performing this show that Duncan and I are so proud of,” said Donohoe. “and to be joined by such an array of talent in Lenny, Sue and Ambika: it’s a dream come true.”
