The ProShot of the Tony-winning Broadway revival of Merrily We Roll Along is headed to movie theaters starting December 5. Sony Pictures Classics and Fathom Entertainment will release the live stage capture across the U.S., with international dates to follow in countries including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the U.K.
Filmed during the end of its run at the Hudson Theatre, the production stars Daniel Radcliffe, Jonathan Groff, and Lindsay Mendez. Directed by Maria Friedman, the revival has become a celebrated comeback for the once-overlooked 1981 musical by Stephen Sondheim and George Furth.

The show, which opened on Broadway in October 2023 and closed in July 2024, was a breakout success. It recouped its $12 million investment in just six months and broke multiple box office records. The production won four Tony Awards: Best Revival of a Musical, Best Actor for Groff, Best Featured Actor for Radcliffe, and Best Orchestrations for Jonathan Tunick.
“Merrily” tells the story of three friends—Franklin Shepard (Groff), Charley Kringas (Radcliffe), and Mary Flynn (Mendez)—as they navigate life and career in the entertainment industry. The story unfolds in reverse, spanning three decades. Iconic songs featured include “Old Friends,” “Now You Know,” and “Not a Day Goes By.”
This marks the second time Friedman’s staging of Merrily We Roll Along has been filmed. The earlier 2013 West End version was previously released for streaming, though it’s not currently available.
The film was confirmed in April after fans spotted signs during the show’s final performances. “The show producers are filming their production of Merrily for posterity,” a spokesperson said. “That doesn’t happen very often. We’ll see what happens.”
The cast also includes Krystal Joy Brown, Katie Rose Clarke, and Reg Rogers, with a large ensemble supporting. The release of the film celebrates a remarkable revival that turned a historic flop into one of Broadway’s biggest recent successes.
