Begin Again, the stage adaptation of John Carney’s 2013 film starring Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo, will make its world premiere at San Diego’s Old Globe Theatre in fall 2026. Performances run September 6 through October 11, with opening night set for September 17. The production is aiming for a future Broadway transfer.
The musical is adapted by Jenny Clark Embrey and features a new original score by Train frontman Pat Monahan, who has been attached to the project since at least 2023. Music supervision, arrangements, and orchestrations are by Brian Usifer (Kinky Boots, Chess), choreography is by David Neumann (Hadestown, Swept Away), and Lorin Latarro (Chess, Waitress, Into the Woods) will direct.

The original film, which earned an Academy Award nomination for the song “Lost Stars,” follows a heartbroken songwriter (Knightley) and a burned-out record producer (Ruffalo) who meet in New York City and form a transformative musical collaboration. Adam Levine and Hailee Steinfeld also starred, with Carney writing and directing.
“We are delighted to finally share that Begin Again is making its world premiere at The Old Globe in San Diego,” producers Stephanie Kramer, Tamar Climan, and Nicole Kramer said. “This project has been a true labor of love, and we’ve been fortunate to bring together an extraordinary team of creative artists to reimagine this beloved story for the stage. With an original score—and, of course, the Academy Award–nominated song ‘Lost Stars’—this new musical captures the heart, hope, and transformative power of music that made the film so special.”
The production marks the third of Carney’s films adapted for the stage, following Once and Sing Street. RCI Theatricals will serve as general manager. Casting has yet to be announced. Tickets are available via subscription packages at TheOldGlobe.org, with single-ticket sales to be announced.
