A24 has unveiled the first trailer for Marty Supreme, director Josh Safdie’s latest film and his first solo directorial effort since 2008. Starring Timothée Chalamet in the title role, the film is set in the 1950s and explores the unlikely world of competitive ping pong. Chalamet plays Marty Mauser, “a young man with a dream no one respects,” who is driven by a relentless ambition for greatness.

The trailer, set to Alphaville’s 1984 anthem “Forever Young,” opens with Marty phoning a glamorous movie star, played by Gwyneth Paltrow. “You know, I’m something of a performer, too,” he says, standing on a hotel bed. The film teases a romantic entanglement between the two characters. As Paltrow told Vanity Fair, “I mean, we have a lot of sex in this movie,” describing the relationship as “kind of transactional for them both.”
Though not officially confirmed, the film appears to draw loose inspiration from the life of ping pong champion Marty Reisman. In one scene, Mauser attempts to explain the sport’s global appeal to investor Kevin O’Leary. “I know it’s hard to believe, but I’m telling you, this game, it fills stadiums overseas. And it’s only a matter of time before I’m staring at you from the cover of a Wheaties box.”
Elsewhere, Marty speaks to his love interest (Odessa A’zion), confessing: “I have a purpose, and if you think that’s some sort of blessing, it’s not. It means I have an obligation to see a very specific thing through, and with that obligation comes sacrifice.”
The supporting cast is eclectic, featuring Tyler, the Creator, Fran Drescher (as Marty’s mother), Penn Jillette, Abel Ferrara, and O’Leary. Safdie co-wrote the screenplay with longtime collaborator Ronald Bronstein. Both also serve as producers, along with Chalamet, Eli Bush, Anthony Katagas, and A24.
Marty Supreme is scheduled for a theatrical release on December 25. The film marks Chalamet’s return following his Oscar-nominated role in A Complete Unknown.
