A star-studded Off-Broadway revival of Tartuffe is set to open this fall at New York Theatre Workshop, with Matthew Broderick and David Cross headlining a bold new version of Molière’s classic satire.
The production will feature a new adaptation by acclaimed playwright Lucas Hnath (A Doll’s House, Part 2; Dana H.), and will be directed by Obie Award winner Sarah Benson (Teeth). Broderick takes on the title role of Tartuffe, a scheming con man posing as a man of virtue. Cross will play Orgon, the gullible patriarch who invites Tartuffe into his home.
New York Theatre Workshop describes the show as “a razor-sharp reinvention of Molière’s iconoclastic comedy in a mad-dash production full of ferocious wit, outrageous design, and downright buffoonery.”
Joining the cast are Emily Davis (Is This A Room) as Mariane, Bianca del Rio (RuPaul’s Drag Race) as Mme Pernelle, Amber Gray (Hadestown) as Elmire, Ryan Haddad (Dark Disabled Stories) as Damis, Francis Jue (Yellow Face) as Cleante, Lisa Kron (Fun Home) as Dorine, and Ike Ufomadu (Ziwe) as Valère.

The creative team includes design collective dots (Oh, Mary!) on scenic design, Enver Chakartash (I Love You So Much I Could Die) on costumes, Stacey Derosier (Lights Out: Nat “King” Cole) on lighting, and Peter Mills Weiss (The Headlands) on sound. Kasson Marroquin (Wet Brain) will serve as production stage manager.
Molière’s Tartuffe, first performed in 1664, is a biting comedy that skewers religious hypocrisy and blind faith. Hnath’s version marks a modern reinvention, blending the play’s core satire with a contemporary edge and visual spectacle.
This production is part of NYTW’s 2025–2026 season, which also includes Saturday Church, a new musical by pop artist Sia, and My Joy is Heavy, a world premiere from Obie-winning duo The Bengsons. A fourth production will be announced later.
Performances of Tartuffe begin in late fall. Tickets and dates will be released soon.
