Jinkx Monsoon is set to take over the role of Mary Todd Lincoln in the acclaimed Broadway play Oh, Mary! this August. The two-time RuPaul’s Drag Race winner announced the news during an appearance on The Today Show on June 18.
“I will be taking over the role of Mary Todd Lincoln starting September 27,” Monsoon said. “To be very clear, I am in Pirates! until the end of the run of Pirates. And then, about a week later, I take over Mary Todd.”
Oh, Mary! is a satirical reimagining of the final days of First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln, portrayed as a chaotic, cabaret-loving figure. The play, written and performed by Cole Escola, opened on Broadway in July 2024 and has been extended multiple times due to its success. Escola will conclude their run on June 21, with Tituss Burgess stepping into the role for a six-week engagement starting June 23. Monsoon will succeed Burgess in the role for an eight-week engagement from August 4 to September 27.

Monsoon currently stars as Ruth in Pirates! The Penzance Musical at the Todd Haimes Theatre which is scheduled to have its final performace on July 27. She will transition to the role of Mary Todd Lincoln in Oh, Mary! at the Lyceum Theatre. Her engagement in Escola’s Tony-nominated play is set to begin on August 4, 2025, and run through September 27, 2025 .
Reflecting on her journey, Monsoon shared her gratitude for the opportunities she has received as a trans feminine performer. “I feel very honored and privileged to be in this position right now because, as a trans feminine actress, I was convinced this wasn’t possible,” she said. “I thought I had to choose to be an actor or choose to be a trans person, but I didn’t think the world was gonna let me be both.”
She continued, “As soon as I kind of made it to this Broadway world, it felt like there was a space already waiting for me. It’s really just been a magical time.”
Monsoon’s casting in Oh, Mary! marks another milestone in her Broadway career, following her acclaimed performances in Chicago and Little Shop of Horrors. Her upcoming role as Mary Todd Lincoln is highly anticipated by audiences and critics alike.
