This fall, Broadway will welcome back Chess in its first-ever revival, starring Lea Michele, Aaron Tveit, and Nicholas Christopher. The musical, known for its Cold War setting and dramatic love triangle, will open in a Shubert theater in fall 2025. The exact dates and venue will be announced soon.
The show features music by ABBA’s Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, with lyrics by Tim Rice. Emmy winner Danny Strong (Dopesick) will provide a new book for this production. Tony-winning director Michael Mayer, who previously worked with Michele on Spring Awakening and Funny Girl, will lead the revival. Choreography will be by Lorin Latarro (Waitress), with music supervision by Brian Usifer.

Set during a tense World Chess Championship between an American and a Soviet player, the story blends politics, romance, and personal rivalry. Michele will play Florence Vassy, manager and love interest caught between the two competitors—Tveit as Freddie Trumper (the American) and Christopher as Anatoly Sergievsky (the Soviet).
Chess first opened in London’s West End in 1986 and was reworked for its 1988 Broadway debut. Despite its short run in New York, the musical developed a passionate fanbase and gained lasting recognition, especially for songs like “One Night in Bangkok.”
Michele returns to Broadway after a successful run in Funny Girl. She’s also known for originating Wendla in Spring Awakening and starring in Glee. Tveit won a Tony Award for Moulin Rouge! and starred in Next To Normal and Catch Me If You Can. Christopher’s Broadway credits include Hamilton, Little Shop of Horrors, and Sweeney Todd.
Chess is produced by Tom Hulce, Robert Ahrens, and The Shubert Organization, in partnership with Creative Partners Productions. Additional casting and full creative details will be announced soon.
